CREATIVE MACAU is showing Joaquim Barreto’s 16 colour photographs of fashion, THE CONTINGENT OF REPUBLIC, from 26 Oct to 15 Nov, 2006.

Joaquim Barreto was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1975. At the age of eleven, he and his family emigrated to Australia where he completed a Bachelor of Economics in 1998. Joaquim’s love for photography began when he bought a digital camera to take on a trip to Koh Sa Mui, Thailand, in 2000. At that time, he was working as a civil servant in the former Portuguese enclave of Macau, China, but photography quickly became his passion and in 2003, Joaquim decided to become a full-time photographer.

THE CONTINGENT REPUBLIC is a project about peace and justice. It just happens to be expressed through fashion photography. The photographs are divided in two; eight of the photographs are the final collection of pieces that were submitted to the London College of Fashion by Joaquim as his final presentation to the Masters of Arts (fashion Photography) in December 2005. The other eight photographs were shot earlier last year and it was a submission to a fashion magazine called “The Space Between”. Joaquim thought that it was a prelude to the final piece for his masters.
