Catherine, CHEONG cheng wa

Since she was a child, she have always loved drawing, in particular, she like to reproduce the black and white outline drawings in colouring books. Then, she studied Graphic Design at MPU Macau, and after graduation, I have been engaged in related work for many years, which has strengthened my knowledge and practical skills in various aspects of graphic design. All these have influenced my future artistic creation.

Later she studied in France and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art et de Design in Toulon, specialising in video installation. After returning to Macao, she works in the government culture department, as an exhibition designer, and assisting in the planning of art exhibition activities. At the same time, she practiced intaglio at the workshop of the Macau Art Museum with the master James WONG. As printmaking is a medium of “plural art”, it brought back the fun of reproduction in her childhood and attracted her deeply. Afterwards she then combined traditional intaglio with modern digital printing to produce intaglio prints with hand-drawn black line outlines and colourful digital images. The representative work of this technique, “Macau People”, won the Gold Medal in the International Print Competition of the 2nd Macau Print Triennial. This honor encouraged her to further her studies in France again, where she enrolled in the Master of Visual Arts programme at the University of Paris VIII, where she studied personal creation and the theory of contemporary printmaking.

She has presented her artwork in France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Beijing, Taiwan, Macao and many other places.
She lives and works in Paris and Macau.
